The Welding Institute of Malaysia (WIM)—a non-profit membership body affiliated with TWI (UK) and representing Malaysia in IIW—delivers a practical, industry-aligned pathway from first arc to certified competency. This MIG welding training is purpose-built for newcomers and professionals not currently hands-on, offering a structured on-ramp to safe, accurate, and repeatable welding performance in modern fabrication environments. Using Augmented Reality (AR) simulators before torch-in-hand work, you’ll progress efficiently, reduce consumable waste, and gain confidence for shop-floor application.

What Is GMAW, MIG, and MAG?

GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) is a semi-automatic process that feeds a consumable wire electrode through a welding gun while a shielding gas protects the molten pool. In common usage, GMAW includes two modes: MIG (Metal Inert Gas), which uses inert gases (e.g., argon or argon-rich mixes) typically for non-ferrous and stainless applications, and MAG (Metal Active Gas), which uses active gases (e.g., CO₂ or argon/CO₂ blends) especially for carbon steels.

In production settings, GMAW welding is valued for speed, clean appearance, and ease of automation. You’ll learn how gas choice, wire diameter, polarity, transfer mode, and travel speed interact—so your settings match the joint, position, and material at hand.

 

Duration: 3 days (as per the course brief). The schedule is engineered to move you from fundamentals to hands-on proficiency with clear learning milestones.

Structured learning path

  • Safety & fundamentals: PPE, electrical safety, fire prevention, fume control, equipment anatomy, and workspace organization.
  • Process theory: Power sources, polarity, wire feed systems, contact tips/nozzles, and the metal transfer modes (short circuit, globular, spray, pulsed).
  • Shielding gases & consumables: Gas selection (MIG vs MAG), flow rates, wire types/diameters, and how they impact penetration, spatter, and bead profile.
  • Joint preparation & fit-up: Material cleaning, edge prep, root gaps, and tack welding best practices.
  • Parameter setting: Voltage, amperage, wire-feed speed, inductance, and travel speed—how to dial in stable arcs for different materials and thicknesses.
  • AR simulation (Day 1 & 2): Skill acquisition in a controlled environment—gun angles, stick-out, travel technique, and heat input awareness—before real welding.
  • Hands-on welding (Day 2 & 3): Bead-on-plate, stringers, and weaves; fillet and butt joints in flat and horizontal positions, progressing as ability allows.
  • Quality awareness: Visual inspection, common defects (lack of fusion, porosity, undercut), basic rework, and practical prevention methods.
  • Documentation basics: Reading WPS/PQR essentials and understanding acceptance criteria at a foundational level.
  • Readiness for credentials: Guidance on next steps toward GMAW welding certification pathways recognized by industry.

 

Because the course is tightly focused, it also provides an excellent bridge into a more structured MIG welding course track that leads to formal assessments and employer-recognized credentials.
